Created completely during the COVID-19 national lockdown without a single model present in person
'Don't Expect Miracles' observes the actions, behaviours and mindsets of the middle and upper-middle class during the national lockdown through a distorted, heightened lens.'
My aim when creating this project was to take the viewer on a journey though the COVID-17 induced climate and lockdown culture, projected through a camp, surreal and uncanny valley-esk visual language, narrated by a gaze filled with feelings of total self-awareness, a pseudo victim mentality and ironic superiority complex. I wanted the project to feel as though it was being narrated and curated by a gaze that is existing within its own position of privilege within a world that it has already come to reject.
The project was created without any models on set. All the models featured within this project were modelling in their own homes (directed over FaceTime) then digitally placed into custom digitally constructed sets, make-up and clothing.
The art style takes cues from the likes of David LaChapelle and Tim Walker, however, due to physical restrictions at the time of creation the project relied heavy on photo manipulation and compositing to come to life.
