I was commissioned to work on an exciting project, tasked with producing a proof of concept, UI and UX design, logo, app icon, and early branding for an upcoming social media app called 'SoulSpot.' This app aimed to address the lack of authenticity and personal connections in existing social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. 'SoulSpot' was envisioned as a counter to the impersonal void experienced by users on these platforms.
The concept behind 'SoulSpot' focused on creating an environment that prioritised real personal connections and authenticity. It took inspiration from various elements of major social media platforms and combined them seamlessly into a stream of consciousness. One significant departure from the existing models was the removal of forced algorithms, replacing them with a chronological ordering system. This ensured that users would no longer be subjected to content selected by the app or advertisers, allowing them greater control over their viewing experience.
Another innovative aspect of 'SoulSpot' was the elimination of numeric values such as likes, comments, and followers. Instead, the app embraced a more anonymous approach, shifting away from the pressures associated with seeking views, clicks, and screen time. The focus was on experiencing the essence of friends, favourite content creators, and oneself. 'SoulSpot' aimed to encourage real, authentic, and personal content, rejecting the manufactured nature prevalent in current social media models.
Despite the promising concept and the extensive work put into creating the UI and UX design, logo, app icon, and early branding, unfortunately, the project fell through, and 'SoulSpot' never became a reality. While it is disappointing when such endeavours do not come to fruition, the experience gained from this project will undoubtedly inform future endeavours and contribute to the ongoing exploration of creating more authentic and meaningful social media experiences for users.
