An exploration into visual memory triggers.
‘Outside Inwards’ is a retrospective look into the triggers that cause one self to look away from the external and search internally. It encompasses the concept of memory and expresses its importance. This photo book collates memories from various individuals and the specific triggers that cause them to reflect. The individuals memories are personal, impersonal, important and trivial. The spectrum is varied.
To create “Outside Inwards”, I collected over 300 objects and photographs from various different individuals ranging from the late 1800s to present day. This was refined down to be just over 100 featured within the pages of the book.
I chose to feature the objects that the owners had most sentimental attachment to. Each object has it’s own story as to why someone has chosen to collect and keep it. The book can seem erratic in the way that certain objects contrast each other on the pages, however, this was a deliberate design choice made to replicate the process of how unpredictable memory recall can be.
